Katherine Walker

How To Choose The Right Hat For A Wedding By Katherine Elizabeth

Katherine WalkerAward winning designer Katherine Elizabeth gives her advice on how to choose the right hat for a wedding here on Bride Icon:

Mother of the Bride

The Mother of the Bride is one of the most important people of the day apart from the bride. She will spend a lot of time with guests so may want to move away from the traditional crown and brim unless her brim sweeps up. This also helps to take away shadows.  Alternatively you could wear a headpiece in sinamay or parisisal straw or a cocktail hat.  Always wear your hat on a slant as that is the most flattering position.

Katherine WalkerGuest at a wedding

If you choose a formal outfit to reflect the occasion, you should wear something that compliments this outfit such as a smart boxed headpiece or upturned brim. But a lot of weddings are becoming more relaxed these days and in those occasions your headpiece can also be relaxed with ether bright colours or soft nude and pink tones to match your summer dress. Lots of people are wearing flowers these days but it’s still nice to wear them on a hat instead of a headband, unless the wedding is very bohemian.

Katherine WalkerChoose the right hat to compliment your face shape.

  • If your face is round, chose a hat that is more architectural and angular, wear something on a slant or that cuts across you face. Stay away from fluff or round hats.
  • If your face is square soften the look with a round hat that has softer feathery features.
  • If you have a long face do not wear anything that is to tall, have an angular headpiece that cuts across the face to break up the length.

When visiting a milliner chose your outfit first so that your Milliner will be able to design you a hat to match, the hat also has to match your personality, the shape of your face, the cut of your dress and colour but you can leave that up to the milliner.

Katherine WalkerA good milliner will always check the design with you and let you try it on halfway through the design process so that you can be sure you are completely happy and looking forward to wearing it.

Zuhair Murad Launches Fall 2018 @ The Wedding Club, London

Zuhair Murad’s passion and skills for turning a bride into an icon is unprecedented in the world of couture and bridal fashion.  The creative journey for this reputable designer began in Beirut, Lebanon, where he is renowned for creating a catalogue of ready-to-wear couture and bridal gowns, dressing the royals and celebrities across the globe.

Zuhair MuradBridal couture has particularly been a fond pursuit for Zuhair, combining meticulous attention to detail, sensual silhouettes against the femininity of the female form and the pure accuracy to ensure all the strategic elements of glamour and sensuality are endorsed to create the fairytale dream wedding dress.

Zuhair MuradZuhair MuradThis week, Bride Icon attended the launch of Zuhair Murad’s Fall 2018 collection named a Midwinter’s Night Dream at The Wedding Club in Knighstbridge, London.  Of course, as you can see from the stunning images – yet again, Zuhair Murad has broken another revolutionary record in show stopping bridal gowns.

Zuhair MuradZuhair MuradTaking an ode to the shades of blushing pink and powdery palettes, the gowns are influenced by embellishing silk chiffon, tulle, floral themes, Mikado and lace reminiscing some of his previous inspirations.  The detachable over-skirts and the distinctive long capes define this opulent collection giving the bride the option and flexibility to switch looks during her very special day.  Beads, intricate hand embroidery and 3-D petals were the highlights of each of the fairytale dresses, however, the statement accessories such as the ruffled tulle stoles around the shoulder and the beaded and floor length capes added a touch of magic and Hollywood glamour for every beautiful bride to be!

A midwinter’s night dream enlightened….

Zuhair MuradZuhair MuradAn aurorae borealis, a quartz crystal or blushing cheeks: pink, the eternal symbol of femininity is celebrated throughout Zuhair Murad’s Bridal Collection 2018. The shade is used in a limited palette, ranging from tender ivory to powdered and muted tones, giving centre stage to the house’s savoir-faire and the body it will envelop. The collection celebrates a tradition both ancient and modernized, and more importantly, the woman is it designed for, equally in love and of her time. Flowers appear in all shapes and sizes throughout the pieces, expressing the same philosophy – worn as a crown, natural and untamed, seemingly out of a Romantic-era engraving, embroided in 3D, or delicate on sheer chiffon like a tattoo on nude skin.

Zuhair Murad

Zuhair Murad

Channelling the timeless elegance of Grace Kelly, the short and bouffant cut Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face or Mia Farrow’s pared down chic in their respective off and on-screen weddings, each design radically rethinks classical codes.  Silk chiffon, tears of ruffles and airy lace create a tension between what is made visible and invisible: boleros, capes and veils drape themselves over a bustier, an off-the-shoulder cut, a high slit…this equilibrium reflects a harmony between worlds, cultures and generations.

Trends For An Autumn Wedding By Veritas

With Autumn well and truly here, it’s time to get to grips with this season’s bridal fashion and top jewellery trends. Our friends at Veritas Gift have been keeping a close eye on the recent bridal catwalks and have given their top trends that will be making waves this Autumn here on Bride Icon:

Forehead BandsBeginning with forehead bands, which were seen on every bridal catwalk at the bridal fashion shows – it seems they are here to stay!  An alternative to the veil – this season it’s all about adding an elegant and 20’s inspired twist with an embellished, lace headpiece. With so many different styles to try, it can enhance the vintage chic glamour look or perhaps go a little more subtle with a plain lace band.

Adding a hint of chic to the wedding outfit, it seems a choker style necklace is going to be a strong contender within bridal fashion this Autumn. Coming in many different shapes and styles, you can definitely find one to suit your taste, perhaps go a little more elegant with a silver band choker.

veritasStill a firm favorite on catwalks, delicate necklaces seem to always add some sophistication to a bridal outfit, bringing a certain elegance to the décolletage area. However, you may want to opt for perhaps a more luxurious diamond encrusted necklace which you can treasure for years to come.

VeritasPendants are always popular with brides, purely because they are a piece that can be kept and cherished.  Many pendants open up allowing to keep a photo inside, which of course, adds a very personal touch. Veritas gifts offer an array of beautifully crafted pendants in many different styles and colours- their acorn pendant is particularly a strong favorite with their clients.

Enamel jewellery has long been a favourite for many women who want to show off their individual style.  The enamel range of jewellery seems to be making its way slowly into bridal fashion.  There are many different designs and colors to choose from, with some popular options being enamel cuffs that add a touch of drama to a bridal look!  For more tips and jewellery designs see  www.veritasgifts.co.ukVeritas

Things To Do Honeymooning in Cape Town

Cape Town

Cape TownCape Town is one of the most stunningly beautiful places on earth- so it’s no surprise that hundreds of newlyweds flock here each year. From its iconic and domineering Table Mountain, to its fantastic beaches and surf, there really is so much on offer in this wonderfully diverse City. The experts at Cape Portfolios have listed below their top must do & see things in Cape Town.

Visit the Cape Peninsula

Visiting the Cape Peninsula is a must to for anyone visiting the area who has a little more time on their hands, there are many tours you can book on which will take you to the main attractions of this dramatic coastline such as the famous Cape of Good Hope, Cape point and the fantastic Boulders beach home to the African penguin colony where you can get up and close to the wildlife. You can also do a self-drive tour if you want to spend a little longer in these areas.

cape town

Take a romantic visit to the Cape Winelands

If you’re a bit of a wine connoisseur and have enough time on your hands, why not head about an hour’s drive from Cape Town where lies the Cape Winelands, which you can either self-drive or take a guided tour. Some of the best vineyards in Cape Town are Tokara, Kanonkop, and Delaire Graff Estate. Located in the Constantia Valley, only about 20 minutes outside of Cape Town is the oldest wine producing estate in South Africa, Groot Constantia, which is definitely worth a visit for a romantic day out.

Cape Town Cable car up table mountain

Possibly one of the most popular attractions in Cape Town, and one if it’s most celebrated features is the iconic Table Mountain. The rocks of the mountain are approximately 600 million years old, and are 6 times older than the Himalayas. Whether you choose to climb the mountain, take the cable car, or appreciate it from afar, this is undoubtedly the most popular must do attraction in Cape Town.

cape townVisit the beautiful beaches

Cape Town is home to some of the most picturesque beaches in the world, each with their own unique advantages. The beaches along the False Bay coastline boast warm water and good swimming conditions; the Atlantic coast water is much colder but always gives off a spectacular turquoise glow. A few of the more popular beaches to visit are Milnerton Beach, Camps Bay Beach and Boulders Beach.

Enjoy the fantastic cuisine

Cape Town is known for its amazingly delicious and diverse cuisine. The South African cooking mainly consists of chicken, game, tomatoes, lemons and limes, as well as corn in form of breads and flour, beans as well as ginger, chili and spices. A few of the best restaurants to visit are The Pot Luck Club, The Hussar Grill Mouille Point & the Chefs Warehouse & Canteen.

Enjoy some evening Jazz

When once it thrived in the 50’s, Jazz is no longer limited to dark, Smokey basement clubs and is celebrated across the world. Cape Town jazz culture has become huge over the last decade and boasts a variety of jazz clubs and events, including the much anticipated annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival. A few of the best places to enjoy some authentic Jazz are The Alliance Française du Cap, The Piano Bar, Kaleidoscope Café all located in central Cape Town- perfect for a night out on the town as newlyweds.

Cape Town Go on a couples safari

The fabulous thing about this area is that it is just a stone’s throw away from the real Africa where you can see the wildlife in their natural habit- and there is nothing more spectacular than this we can assure you. There are many different safari tours and operators to choose from who will pick you up from your accommodation and take you to the various different safari areas.

Cape Town Visit Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

Cape Town’s tourism Centre is located within the fantastic harbour setting opposite Table Mountain, this is where the old historical harbour town meets modern shopping, fine dining and leisure. The V&A Waterfront’s stunning setting has been enticing visitors for years thanks to its status as Cape Town’s leading shopping and entertainment destination. When you visit be sure to watch the street performers and musicians which draw the crowds as well as bustling craft restaurants and markets.

Get to know South African history

If it’s a bit of historical digest you seek whilst in this authentic City, then you must head to Robben Island and the District Six Museum to explore South Africa’s period of apartheid, which came to an end in 1990. The award-winning community museum, District Six educates on the time when the ruling government declared the area ‘whites only’ and over 60,000 of its residents were forcibly taken from their homes.

Go swimming with sharks

Not for the faint hearted, but something that visitors love to try – Shark diving is a popular choice for many travelers to the area. South Africa has an incredibly diverse shark population with a quarter of the world’s shark species dwelling in South African waters. Many tour operators offer shark swimming tours, with them depending on how brave you feel as well as your swimming ability. Adrenalin junkies will want to journey to Gansbaii, the white shark capital of the world- perhaps you may want to watch whilst hubby takes the plunge!

Duncan Croft

Duncan Croft Bridal

Duncan Croft BridalDuncan CroftTo become a bridal couturier is not a decision taken nonchalantly.  It derives from a certain degree of desire to accomplish the real magic behind the most precious day of your life.  One designer who believes in this concept of couture perfection is Duncan Croft.   Captivated by the flowing vision and opulence of brides from a very young age, it was clear why Duncan propelled himself to study at Australia’s leading Fashion House, which then initiated his career by working in a renowned bridal house in Sydney.  With such notable endorsements, it wasn’t too long before he decided to venture out with his own label, Duncan Croft Bridal, recognising couture as a partnership between the designer’s creativity and the client’s personality.

Duncan Croft BridalSo what can you expect from a Duncan Croft ensemble? Duncan is well known for his intrinsic talent of highlighting his client’s unique features, and accentuating the design with a stunning range of individually tailor made couture creations. Using luxury fabrics from across the globe and laces from the fashion capitals of the world, Duncan is set in creating distinctive designs that enrich on the characteristics of the bride and stems from his pivotal consultations.

Duncan Croft Duncan CroftDuncan is considerate not to label words such as luxury and couture so lightly, given how they are now incorporated effortlessly in so many bridal collections – with little regard for the real tailoring behind a couture garment. Consequently, his objective is to work with couture that is true to the original meaning – and that is to be designed and constructed from the beginning.

Bride Icon has been given an exclusive set of alluring and stylish images of the latest collection by Duncan Croft Bridal.  The bridal gowns are orchestrated in an extravagant setting with crystal chandeliers, and feature a mix of heavy laces, intricate beading and fine embroideries with a feminine corded Chantilly and beaded French laces.  See more of Duncan Croft Bridal on the video below which showcases exactly how Duncan has built his reputation over the last seven years and this truly outstanding collection!

Design in Scent

New Bridal Fragrance Collection: Design In Scent – Is Out Now!

In May 2014, scent designer, Gemma Hopkins, the Founder of Design In Scent, was the first to link the power of scent with the magic of weddings. It was in 2016 when she partnered with wedding planner Meghan Fay, MD of Design In Scent, that the UK’s first and only dedicated wedding fragrance collection was developed and the Design In Scent Wedding Fragrance Journey™ concept was born.

Design in Scent

Scent, unlike any other sense has an uncanny ability to move, evoke and inspire us.  It can transport us to a past moment in our lives, another place on the globe or a hidden crevice in our heart. The ability to capture such a momentous occasion and the meaning behind is why wedding scent is becoming an increasingly important part of the wedding day.

Companies big and small are now following in Design In Scent’s footsteps and creating fragranced products for weddings. From Floris who have recently launched their “Together” Fragrance Customisation to Jo Malone’s Bridal Lace Bottle Collection.

Design in Scent

The first time we smell a new scent, we subconsciously associate it with what we are experiencing at the time. This link is permanent, which is why even years later, smell can continue to evoke strong emotional responses. A bride who wears a new perfume during her engagement or a guest who smells a novel fragrance at a wedding will forever associate this scent with the celebration. Years later, a hint of the fragrance will elicit the feelings of love, joy and elation that the bride, groom and guests felt on the wedding day.

Design in Scent

Up until this summer, Design In Scent worked only on a couture basis, designing bespoke wedding fragrances for private clients who wished to fully scent their weddings. While continuing with their bespoke work, on 3 July 2017, Design In Scent  opened their doors to the public for the first time with the launch of their inaugural fragrance collection for retail. Designed especially for weddings, the collection includes 8 eau de parfums and 4 ambience fragrances. The ambience fragrances will be available in candles, ambience mists and intelligent air diffusers for scenting large spaces. A range of miniature products that can be personalised will be available for guest favours. This range of fragrances and products will give couples the ability to weave scent throughout their engagement and wedding day in many unique and creative ways.
