Planning Colors for Your Wedding: Wedding Dresses, Flowers, and More!

Dreaming about your wedding is one thing; planning it is another. From wedding dresses to cakes and tuxedos to flowers – every aspect of your wedding must be carefully planned to “fall in place” on the big day! If you’ve been to one wedding or several, you probably realize the importance of wedding colors. Everything about the wedding is planned according the colors the bride chooses. So, here’s a quick guide to help you plan your wedding colors.

Choose the Right Colors for Your Wedding Dresses

Many brides use their favorite colors for their wedding dresses – pink, red, fuchsia, burgundy, plum, mauve, purple, or blue. But before you choose colors, see if you can’t find some photos of various weddings from the past. Look at a variety of color patterns and combinations before making your choice. You might find colors that you like much better than your usual favorites.

Consider how the colors of your wedding dresses will look with other colorful items once it is all put together for the big wedding day. The bridesmaid dresses will be matched with flowers, tuxedos, mother of the bride dresses, flower girl dresses, accessories, and even the reception decor.

Wedding Dresses with a Touch of Color

A growing trend is to add a touch of color to the bride’s wedding gown. This is perfect for the bride who wants more than the traditional wedding gown. Some brides have color sprinkled throughout their wedding gown with embroidery. The gorgeous embroidery patterns come to life on the wedding dress when color highlights are added. These are usually available in a variety of colors painted on an ivory white wedding gown.

Test Wedding Color Combinations

Don’t be afraid to match unusual colors before making your choice. Some color combinations might surprise you. For example, not many would choose bright peach, bright yellow and white, but these are actually beautiful when coordinated together in wedding flower arrangements with yellow dresses! Try out a variety of combinations to find the right wedding colors for you.

Choose Colors that Complement You

It’s your special day. Choose colors that complement your hair and skin tone. You’ll want colors that make you look wonderful on your wedding day. If you normally look great in red, then you’ll probably look fantastic amidst red decor and red bridesmaid dresses. Maybe you can even add some red embroidery colors to your wedding gown. Whatever color suits you should work fine for the wedding.

Other Considerations

Other things to consider before choosing your wedding colors include the colors of the church or building where the wedding will be held as well as the reception hall, the types of flowers available for that time of year (if using real ones), and the availability of wedding dresses in those colors.

Once you choose colors for your wedding dresses and flowers, you’re ready to start planning the wedding. To save time, you can find a wide variety of wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and even prom dresses online. Be sure to choose the colors you love. After all, it is your special day!

Fall 2019 Bridal Fashion Week is finally here and the wedding-worthy looks are stunning. From serious bling to regal capes and fun party dresses, we’ve got all the hottest trends coming to a bridal salon near you in the coming months. Read on to see some of our favorites.

So now that the shows have wrapped, we’re finally able to dissect the best of the collections with our Wedding Dress Trend Report 2019.

LELA ROSE

While some of our favourite wedding dress trends are sticking around for another season – we’re looking at you off-the-shoulder sleeves, 90s silhouettes, jumpsuits, sheer fabrics, backless styles, crop tops and separates – there’s also a host of new and developing trends we’re excited to see real brides rocking in the next couple of years.

This is our pick of the next big bridal trends for 2019 and beyond!

1. Something Blue

We’re all for wedding dresses with a little colour, and from sky to cornflower, the touches of blue on the bridal runways were like a breath of fresh air!

As seen at: Jenny Packham, Carolina Herrera, Leanne Marshall

REEM ACRA
VIKTOR & ROLF
GALIA LAHAV

2. 3D Florals

This trend has been around for a while, but this season, it’s easier to reel off the designers who didn’t have 3D florals in their collection, than the ones who did. Giving everything from a hint of texture to a statement feature, we love this one for its romance and playful possibilities!

As seen at: Temperley, Lela Rose, Tadashi Shoji, Viktor & Rolf, Galia Lahav, Phillipa Lepley, Bowden Dryden, Naeem Khan, Carolina Herrera, Francesca Miranda, Elie Saab, Lihi Hod

ELIE SAAB
MONIQUE LHUILLIER
REEM ACRA

3. Big Ballgowns

Every season offers up a few big ballgowns, but this year they were back in the mainstream – the bigger the better. These Disney wedding-worthy gowns might seem a bit classic, but for 2019, they couldn’t be more in vogue. If you can walk through a standard doorway wearing your wedding dress, it isn’t big enough!

As seen at: Marchesa, Inbal Dror, Galia Lahav, Suzanne Neville, Amsale, Monique Lhuillier, Reem Acra, Elie Saab

TADASHI SHOJI
SASSI HOLFORD
THEIA

4. Tiered Skirts

Looks like our very own Tatum’s mam was a trendsetter, because tiered skirts were everywhere this season. This typically Bo-Peep-style silhouette is getting a couture makeover with luxurious lace, bouncy tulle, and geometric crochet.

As seen at: Theia, Tadashi Shoji, Viktor & Rolf, Suzanne Neville, Monique Lhuillier, Carolina Herrera, Lela Rose, Sassi Holford, Katya Katya Shehurina

LEANNE MARSHALL
VERA WANG
VIKTOR & ROLF

5. Statement Skirts

Pom poms, fanned fabric, splashes of colour and avant garde silhouettes – we saw lots of bold shapes, bright colours and more subtle statements on the runways this season, it’s been all about the bodice for a few years now, so it’s about time the skirt got to shine!

As seen at: David Fielden, Viktor & Rolf, Phillipa Lepley, Vera Wang

BERTA
BHLDN
REEM ACRA

6. Foliage Appliqué

We’re used to seeing floral appliqué all over the runways, but as foliage becomes a lasting trend in wedding floristry, it seems it’s filtered through to the gowns as well.

As seen at: Reem Acra, BHLDN, Berta

LELA ROSE
REEM ACRA
VIKTOR & ROLF

7. Brides with Bows

We’re suckers for cute bows around here, so we were chuffed to see lots of them make cameos across the catwalks. Wedding dresses with bows ranged from the statement to the subtle, but one thing they all had in common, they’re impossibly chic!

As seen at: Viktor & Rolf, Reem Acra, Carolina Herrera, Zuhair Murad, Amasale, Alan Hannah

NAEEM KHAN
JENNY PACKHAM

8. Full-Length Shimmer

Head to toe sequins, pearly beading, and iridescent fabrics, the Bridal Fashion Week runways were alight with shimmer, and we think this trend will resonate with winter brides in particular!

As seen at: Jenny Packham, Naeem Khan, Dany Mizrachi, Savin London, Justin Alexander, Lazaro, Berta, Mira Zwillinger

GALIA LAHAV
SASSI HOLFORD
JENNY PACKHAM

9. Metallics

Give us gold, silver, pewter and rose! We saw lots of metallic wedding dresses over the last few weeks, and while it was something of a mixed bag (1999 called, it wants its debs dress back!), there were some showstoppers. We see fair brides in particular, looking gorgeous in gold, while silver would be fab for a cool city wedding.

As seen at: Jenny Packham, Galia Lahav, Naeem Khan, Sabine Motesem, Ines Di Santo, Mira Zwillinger

SAVIN LONDON
INBAL DROR
SASSI HOLFORD

10. Feathers

Feathers come and go at Bridal Fashion Week, but for Spring 2019, they feature heavily – if you follow us on Instagram Stories, you’ll know we fell hard for a particularly dramatic feather skirt by couture dressmaker, Phillipa Lepley – we’re swooning at the thought of it!

As seen at: Inbal Dror, Phillipa Lepley, Naeem Khan, Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Zuhair Murad, Sassi Holford, Savin London, Ines Di Santo

JENNY PACKHAM
SAVIN LONDON
DANY MIZRACHI

11. Robe Dresses

While it might take a confident bride to pull this trend off, we think these luxurious robe-style wedding dresses are just divine. We can picture it now, a destination wedding somewhere glamorous, an effortless upstyle, some statement jewellery – how fabulous! A twist on this trend was a sheer trench we saw in a few collections – very cool for an alternative elopement.

As seen at: Jenny Packham, Savin London, Ines Di Santo, Dany Mizrachi, Justin Alexander, Gracy Accad

MONIQUE LHUILLIER
GRACY ACCAD
REEM ACRA

12. Dresses with High Neck

Now this is a trend we adore! High neck wedding dresses have been popping up for a few seasons, but they became an official trend for Spring 2019, with elegant lace, long sleeves, or pretty broderie Anglais. A beautiful trend for church weddings too!

As seen at: Reem Acra, Viktor & Rolf, Monique Lhuillier, Dany Mizrachi, Sareh Nouri

How To Choose The Perfect Wedding Dress For Your Big Day

Lyn Ashworth

Your wedding dress is probably the most important element of planning your wedding.  It will be in almost every wedding photo, and it may even be passed down to your daughters someday.

Lyn Ashworth

Choosing the right wedding dress isn’t a matter of looking at dresses until you find one you think is beautiful.  You have to also be certain you’re getting a dress that will make you the beautiful bride you deserve to be, and that means finding a dress that you love, but one that also accentuates your features.

Lyn Ashworth

The bride is the centerpiece of any wedding.  All eyes will be on her, and of course on her dress of choice.  As the center of attention, you want to look your best, and that means choosing the right dress for your body type.

Lyn Ashworth

In the past, only virgin brides could wear white to their wedding.  These days it has become more acceptable for any bride to wear white.  If you aren’t a first-time bride, don’t feel pressured into choosing a white dress.  Today it is just fine to choose white, no matter what your current status.

Lyn Ashworth

You will probably want to speak with someone at the dress shop who could show you how to pick a dress that will accentuate your best features.  For example, if you have a large bust, a dress with a fitted bodice would help accentuate this feature.  If you are very thin, you might want to choose a dress that is fitted all the way down, because a dress that has a large skirt could overwhelm your frame.

Lyn Ashworth

A professional will be able to point you in the right direction.  They will know what type of dress will look best on your frame, and they will be able to help you choose from those dresses that would work for you.

Lyn Ashworth

Don’t be disappointed if your body type can’t support the type of dress you were dreaming of.  It’s much better to choose a dress that will look best on you than to choose a dress you love, but that doesn’t look as good on you.  After all, you deserve to be at your most beautiful on such a special day!

Donna Marina

Donna Marina Couture

Donna Marina situated in Birmingham UK is the couture brand showcasing the fashion designer Marina Zeleznak, endorsing femininity and elegance through her bespoke designs. Ranging from stylish cocktail and full length evening dresses for special occasions, right through to bespoke bridal, Marina is adamant that high end couture and sophistication is the foundation behind her brand.

Donna Marina

Her inspirations when designing are broadly taken from what her experiences in life and spirituality have given – and these individual insights streams through in each and every dress.  Nature and heritage also plays a huge part in creating spectacular eye-catching looks, and most recently creating one of the lightest and brightest collections yet.

Donna Marina

The amalgamations of inspiration within her couture range is an unusual but fascinating mix of Roman culture, Southern Italian panoramic views, exotic food and folk stories, but on the other end of the spectrum Donna Marina couture applies temples, the streets in Waterloo, Birmingham nights and the international influence of the London night circuit.  It’s quite a combination, but for Donna Marina these are the beliefs that materialise to accomplish her desires in creating something very special and unique for the modern and elegant woman.

Donna Marina

Donna Marina couture features Sanya Malik in her latest collection.  Sanya is one of the brand’s strong faces and as a successful model herself, she promotes her own sense of style and elegance that matches the brand’s deep roots of femininity.  Sanya has been flourishing with her endeavours in modelling both here in the UK and abroad, and endorses the Donna Marina luxury dresses with panache and the grace that it deserves.  However, she has most recently been successful in accomplishing her dream of being featured in Vogue Italia.

Donna Marina

Katherine Walker

How To Choose The Right Hat For A Wedding By Katherine Elizabeth

Katherine WalkerAward winning designer Katherine Elizabeth gives her advice on how to choose the right hat for a wedding here on Bride Icon:

Mother of the Bride

The Mother of the Bride is one of the most important people of the day apart from the bride. She will spend a lot of time with guests so may want to move away from the traditional crown and brim unless her brim sweeps up. This also helps to take away shadows.  Alternatively you could wear a headpiece in sinamay or parisisal straw or a cocktail hat.  Always wear your hat on a slant as that is the most flattering position.

Katherine WalkerGuest at a wedding

If you choose a formal outfit to reflect the occasion, you should wear something that compliments this outfit such as a smart boxed headpiece or upturned brim. But a lot of weddings are becoming more relaxed these days and in those occasions your headpiece can also be relaxed with ether bright colours or soft nude and pink tones to match your summer dress. Lots of people are wearing flowers these days but it’s still nice to wear them on a hat instead of a headband, unless the wedding is very bohemian.

Katherine WalkerChoose the right hat to compliment your face shape.

  • If your face is round, chose a hat that is more architectural and angular, wear something on a slant or that cuts across you face. Stay away from fluff or round hats.
  • If your face is square soften the look with a round hat that has softer feathery features.
  • If you have a long face do not wear anything that is to tall, have an angular headpiece that cuts across the face to break up the length.

When visiting a milliner chose your outfit first so that your Milliner will be able to design you a hat to match, the hat also has to match your personality, the shape of your face, the cut of your dress and colour but you can leave that up to the milliner.

Katherine WalkerA good milliner will always check the design with you and let you try it on halfway through the design process so that you can be sure you are completely happy and looking forward to wearing it.
