However, it is best to make use of a cream cleanser to do this, since it won’t take away the natural oil from your skin, which protects it. Don’t use anything that can dry out your skin, since it can become prone to bacteria and cellular damage.

Honest cosmetic setUse rosewater as toner – Using rosewater as your toner provides a lots of key benefits.  Aside from maintaining the radiant looks of your skin, rosewater actually contains substances which can also maintain your skin’s moisture.  It is also a good solution that you can use if you have allergic skin or to treat sunburn.

Replace candies and chocolates with fresh fruits – One of the many weaknesses especially for brides is to crave for sweets, which can affect health and of course, beauty.  Thus, instead of sweets, and other food items that are filled with sugar, you should try to eat a lot of  fresh fruits.  Foods that have high sugar content can enlarge your pores, aside from the fact that it can make you gain weight.

Some of which would include collagen and elastin recovery, improve the circulation of your blood vessels, even out your skin colour, improve hydration, and help with the skin tone.  It can also make your skin soft and radiant.

Using lip balmKeep in mind that maintaining the condition of your lips can also enhance your beauty. To do that, it is always best to carry a lip balm wherever you may go. Lip balm can prevent your lips from drying out and it is one of the best ways to prevent or cure lip chapping. With the right kind of lip balm, it can also soften your lips. There are plenty of flavoured balms too so try them out.

Be gentle with your skin near your eyes – The skin under your eyes is one of the most sensitive parts of your body. Thus, it is best that you are gentle with it. You should not pull or stretch it, since it would definitely show, and affect your looks. With regular pulling and stretching in that part of your face, it can look wrinkled or saggy in no time.

Be conscious of your weight – One of the many biggest issues for brides is weight and it is a time when all brides are conscious of wanting to lose a few pounds to look their very best.  It’s important to note, whether you gain or lose weight you may have problems in properly fitting your clothes. Therefore, it is best to maintain your weight at an ideal level, so that you can feel healthy and you can fit perfectly in your dream dress.

Don’t visit the kitchen too often – If you want to prevent having bouts and bouts of acne infection, you should avoid going to the kitchen, especially when someone is cooking.  Its good to keep in mind that there is oil floating around your kitchen, when it is heated.  Therefore, if you visit the kitchen during times of cooking, then you would be accumulating oil on your skin, which is bad news.  Not exactly practical but something to keep in mind.

Minimize stressWhenever you are stressed out, it would actually show on your eyes, the expression of your face, as well as your skin. In fact, stress can also cause pimples. Therefore, you should minimise stress as much as possible – easier said than done given brides are renowned to be stressed – however take action by taking deep breaths whenever you encounter stressful situations.  Following other healthy practices in breathing and meditation can also help alleviate stress.

Avoid oily foods – When you eat foods that are filled with bad oil, it would eventually get accumulated, which can lead to weight gain. Gaining weight can alter your figure, aside from the fact that it can put you at risk to a number of diseases. In addition, oily foods is also one of the top causes of pimples. The key factor here is to be eating the good fats that help skin and not the bad ones.

Keep your hands off your face – If you want to prevent pimples to affect your image, then you should keep your hands off your face.  You need to remember that there is always a tendency for your hands to touch certain things, which may contain dirt and bacteria. When you touch your face on a regular basis, then you may irritate it.  Thus, touch your face only when you need to, and only with recently washed hands

Keep away from the sun –  Although we all love the sun, exposing yourself to the sun can irritate your skin, which can lead to having pimples. Aside from that, it can also cause dry skin. Therefore, it is best to stay in the shade in most parts of the day.  If you are out in the sun do make use of a quality sunscreen product.

Get help with severe acne – There are times when acne can attack without warning. If you do have severe acne, you should not hesitate in getting help for it.  Visit a dermatologist as soon as possible, so that you can finally put a stop to it, and live a life with healthy and acne free skin.

Try one product at a time – To cure acne or any other skin disorders, you may have a tendency to make use of different types of products all at once. Instead of doing that, you should try one product at a time, so as to give it a chance to work. Aside from that, it is best to focus on a reliable product, than applying different ones, since applying too many of them may irritate your skin even further.

Wear the right clothes – You have to keep in mind that the way you dress can have a huge impact on the way you feel.  Therefore, make sure that you wear clothes that makes you feel good whatever the occasion.  When it really doesn’t matter wear comfortable clothing, so that you would be able to move freely, and be yourself and we know exactly how that feels!

Be mindful of what you apply on your hair – When you apply certain products on your hair, such as gel, hairspray, or mousse, you should do it sparingly. This is because, using it excessively can irritate your scalp.  If you have long hair and it constantly rubs against your face, then it can also be the root cause for having acne infection.  Something to really consider.

Natural Beauty Through Mineral Makeup

assorted-labeled cosmetics bottles near pink petaled flower

As we become more aware of our environment and more aware of the products that we are putting into and onto our bodies, natural and homeopathic products are taking the cosmetic industry by storm.

It’s likely you’ve noticed new skincare and cosmetic companies popping up with ‘all natural’ and ‘organic’ products. Of course, just because they say they are, does not necessarily make it true. That is where consumer education comes in, and why it is so important.

The title of this article is ‘Mineral Makeup’. After learning what mineral makeup is, what products go into it, and what its benefits are, you can decide if this is the right choice for you.

What Is Mineral Makeup?

Mineral makeup is designed from all naturally occurring products. It is often recommended by dermatologists to women with sensitive skin, rosacea, post operative, laser and other procedures because of its intrinsic skin soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a powder makeup of finely milled minerals. It can provide very sheer or very opaque coverage, depending on the formulation and application. However, it still allows natural skin radiance to show through, so you don’t get the dreaded ‘mask’ look. It is typically free of fragrance and preservatives. Minerals cannot feed bacteria, so there is no danger of spoilage, thus it needs no preservatives. It does not go bad. It is very good for oily skin because it has several oil- absorbing components.

assorted-color soap packs

It is usually applied with a brush, and is typically shown to be ‘buffed’ into the skin. This technique forces the makeup into your pores, which is never a good thing. A technique that works with better quality mineral makeup (which we’ll discuss later) is to ‘dust” the makeup on, instead of ‘buffing’ it. If a brush irritates your skin, you can also use a non-latex or flocked sponge. Application can be done either wet or dry.

What Are The Ingredients?

This is the most important part. Learning what is in your makeup will give you the ability to choose what will meet your needs best. These are the ingredients you will most likely come across.

• Titanium Dioxide- A white natural sunscreen and anti-inflammatory agent. It is highly reflect, with only a diamond being higher, and thus minimizes fine lines and some skin discolorations.

• Zinc Oxide- A natural sunscreen providing broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

• Sericite- A colorless mica that can be used to cut the opacity of Titanium Dioxide and also works as an oil absorber.

• Cornstarch/ Rice Powder- Cosmetic grade- An oil humectant (draws oil out of the pores). Can make acne worse as it is a source of food for bacteria.

• Kaolin Clay- Natural oil-absorption.

• Mica- Natural ‘glitter’. Provides shimmer and sparkle.

• Iron Oxides- Natural pigment- very opaque. Used for tinting cosmetics.

Ingredients To Avoid

These ingredients are also common, but can cause problems so are best to avoid.

• Talc/ Various Powders- Common fillers- can cause respiratory problems.

• FD&C Dyes- Derived from coal tar.

• Bismuth Oxychloride- Known skin irritant- causes itching, rashes and breakouts. Especially prevalent when the wearer sweats.

• Ferric Ferrocyanide- Controversial because of its suspected toxicity.

• Carmine- Crushed beetles.

What Brand Should I Buy?

Well, if you’re familiar with mineral makeup, it’s likely you’ve seen the infomercials. After further research you’ll find these companies use controversial ingredients, and charge quite a bit for their products.

turmeric scrub jar and face wash pump bottle

There are several good mineral makeup companies out there that provide a much better product at a more affordable price, as well as a superior customer experience. They also offer samples, which the larger companies do not. You will get to try the makeup (unlike in the drugstore!) for a fraction of the cost before you buy it. They do not have expensive advertising and packaging to pay for, so the savings are often passed on to you.

Beauty Makeovers You Should Undergo For Your Big Day

woman wearing teal tube dress while smiling

Are you a woman who has thought about changing your appearance? For many women, thinking is all that they do. With beauty being an important issue in life, especially to many women, many are afraid to make any drastic changes. This is what leads a relatively small number of women to get makeovers each year. With that in mind though, there are a number of reasons as to why you should at least consider undergoing a makeover.

three women faces

One of the many reasons why you should consider getting a makeover is because it can help to improve your appearance, as previously stated. Unfortunately, when it comes to appearance improving techniques, many individuals only think of drastic measures, like weight loss or cosmetic surgery. Yes, these methods can help you improve your physical appearance, but they can be costly. A makeover is a simple, yet affordable way to improve your physical appearance. When undergoing a makeover, you can have your hair done, makeup professionally applied, as well as get a manicure.

In addition to improving your appearance, undergoing a makeover can help to relieve any stress that you may be suffering from. This happens in a number of different ways. For starters, when undergoing a makeover, the professional in change is the one doing all the work; all you have to do is just sit back and relax. Secondly, an improvement in appearance or even just a small appearance change has been known to uplift the spirits of many women, as well as help relive the stresses that they may be suffering from.

Perhaps, the greatest reason as to why you should think about undergoing a makeover is because it is fun. Makeovers are ideal solo or with a group of friends. There is just something exciting about getting a makeover, even if it is one that won’t forever. It is also important to mention that many makeover specialists or beauticians give you freedom over your own makeover, like what you would like done and how. In addition to giving you freedom over your makeover, you may find that your beautician also offers you his or her own professional expertise.

Speaking of expertise, you will find that many professional beauticians have years of training and on-the-job experience underneath their belt. The expertise of the beautician performing your makeover is another one of the many reasons why you should at least consider undergoing a makeover. In addition to giving you professional results, you can also use your makeover as an educational tool. For instance, if your makeover includes makeup application, you may learn a few neat tips, tricks, and techniques. When you think about it from that angle, a makeover can not only improve your appearance now, but in the future as well.

woman getting lips applied with lipstick

The above mentioned reasons are just a few of the many reason why you should at least consider undergoing a professional makeover. If you would like to use a makeover as a way to have fun and relieve all of your stress, you may want to contact your local beauty salons, spas, or hair salons. You can find these establishments by asking those that you know for recommendations, using your local phone book, or the internet. If you would prefer to undergo your makeover in the comfort of your home, you may want to inquire about an at-home makeover. Most individual beauticians, especially those who are self-employed, would be more than willing to accommodate you and at a relatively affordable cost.

Despite what you may have heard in the past, makeovers aren’t just for large social events, like weddings. If you wish, you can get a makeover at just about any point in time, even for no reason at all. Of course, the decision as to whether or not you want to undergo a makeover is your decision to make, but you may want to keep the above mentioned points in mind when making that decision.

Bridal Skincare: The Pre-wedding Prep Your Skin Needs

Bridal Skincare

You have been waiting for your big day for as far as you can remember, and every woman’s dream is to look her very best with her skin reflecting the inner glow she is feeling. However, the biggest fear would be waking up a few days before with signs of a pimple or blotchy skin – but now these things can be prevented if you know how!

Skin specialist and product developer at Colorescience, Patricia Boland, has revealed the only pre-wedding prep your skin needs. She explains here on Bride Icon, when you should begin the prep and what you need to achieve that effortless glow that will look picture perfect.

When should I begin the prep?

A lot of brides want their skin to be luminous and have a natural but dewy complexion which allows them to wear less makeup on the day. In order to achieve that smooth surface you need to invest into a better skincare regime which preps the skin. The later you leave the prep, the more stressed you will become as you will have less time to react to any skin issues on top of the many other responsibilities you hold. Please don’t try anything brand new and drastic before the wedding day as you may get red and flaky skin, stick to what you know suits your skin best.

Start your prep 8 weeks before your big day, most of the work is simple can be done by yourself at home so you don’t to worry about spending a large budget on expensive treatments and products. By maintaining this 5-step process for 8 weeks you will see a big improvement in your skin health.”

Bridal Skincare

So, the 5-step process:

1. Weekly intense hydration mask

Your skin needs to look and feel revitalised as opposed to dehydrated. This is not be confused with dry skin, which is down to a lack of oil, dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of water in the skin. Low levels of moisture can give you a dull complexion, increase fine line and wrinkles and even cause sensitivity and irritation. This affects every type, even oily skin – this step ensures your t-zone is oil free and ready to be a clean base for your makeup. A weekly intense hydration mask will help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles that are exacerbated by dehydration and leave you with plump, youthful and healthy skin.

Bridal Skincare

2.  Salt scrubs

Brides tend to forget about their arms, legs and chest during their bridal skin prep. All eyes are on you during your big day, so you need to reduce any existing or potential dry patches. Add a bath to your weekly routine and throw in bath salts with sodium bicarbonate, this will break down the dry patches and make your skin supple and a sponge for moisture.

3. SPF always

Sun damage will undo all your hard work and you can be affected more easily than you think. Dull, lackluster skin and dark spots can all be a result of UV rays. Either apply sunscreen at the end of your skincare routine in the morning or incorporate makeup with a high SPF to protect your skin. If you are wishing for a slightly sun kissed and bronzed look for your big day then gradually build in a bronzed moisturiser about 3 days before your wedding. This will give time for your colour to adapt into a beautiful and natural subtle tan.

4. Exfoliate and moisturise your body

Use an exfoliation product, whether in a wash or lotion that has AHA or beta hydroxy acid (BHA) to break down dead cells on the top layer of the skin, doing this daily allows further penetration of the moisturiser you apply. Do not exfoliate with physical scrubs or loofahs as these often remove living cells as well which cause damage to the skin.

5. Achieving the dewy look

Use a natural face oil and work firmly in small circles upwards and outwards over your face. By using the knuckles of your index and middle fingers, work along the jawline and use the heels of your hands to press and hold under the cheekbones. Do this daily before you go to sleep to allow the ingredients to settle into your skin, this will give the skin an incredible quality and glow whilst defining the face contours.

Shaan MuSomerset House, played host to the top South Asian fashion and beauty experts for the much anticipated Aashni + Co Wedding Show in London.  Among all the embellishments, jewellery and lavish designs, Bride Icon caught up with the celebrity makeup artist Shaan Mu.  This cheeky chappie with a sparkling personality promotes a mega clientele list ranging from Bollywood stars such as Shraddha Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez to becoming a YouTube sensation in a short span of time with his outstanding expert beauty tips and masterclass tutorials.

Shaan Mu (Muttathil) began his career as a BSc fashion designer, and insists it all happened as a mistake!   No mistake when a chance offer to do a hair and makeup styling course in Delhi changed the direction of his career forever.  After becoming top of the class in cosmetics, he was certain, this is what he wanted to set out to do.  His career as a makeup artist began in 2006 unknown to the world of cosmetics, but 12 years later he holds a proud and gratifying catalogue of being part of 47 Bollywood movies, including 1 Telegu film and 1 international film.

We asked Shaan how it felt to be beautifying some of the most elite Bollywood stars and celebrities in the world!  Being the ever so professional he feels so blessed, appreciative and loves that he has been given such an opportunity.  No doubt saying it’s also been a struggle consisting of a lot of hard work.  However, by acquiring quite the business mindset, he has earned himself the recognition that he deserves as an accomplished makeup artist.  Shaan acknowledges being in the film industry is not easy and even super stars have to go through their tough times.  After struggling for years Shaan has reached the place he wants to be – although we think the world is still his oyster!

Shaan MuAs for brides, Shaan is clear on bridal looks and creativity, although he will advise and share his ideas on what would look good for a bride – he will always ensure the brides have their say, especially if they were after a particular look – recognising this is her day.  This celebrity makeup expert is a follower of trends and keeps up with them, but not necessarily all the time.  He would prefer as a beauty expert to mainly highlight their faces, especially around the eyes, lips and cheeks – the holy grail to the art of beauty!

Bride Icon couldn’t resist asking Shaan who would be the ideal icon that he would love to create a superior look for and, of course, internationally it had to be Kim Kardashian, who he says is a superb businesswoman in her own right.  Nonetheless, there is no doubt his heart is set on Rekha the Bollwood film idol who he considers a beautiful soul both inside and out would be the epitome of his career – we hope it happens Shaan!  We would like to say a huge thank you to Shaan for taking the time out to speak to Bride Icon at the Aashni & Co Wedding Show in London.

How To Choose The Right Hat For A Wedding By Katherine Elizabeth

Katherine WalkerAward winning designer Katherine Elizabeth gives her advice on how to choose the right hat for a wedding here on Bride Icon:

Mother of the Bride

The Mother of the Bride is one of the most important people of the day apart from the bride. She will spend a lot of time with guests so may want to move away from the traditional crown and brim unless her brim sweeps up. This also helps to take away shadows.  Alternatively you could wear a headpiece in sinamay or parisisal straw or a cocktail hat.  Always wear your hat on a slant as that is the most flattering position.

Katherine WalkerGuest at a wedding

If you choose a formal outfit to reflect the occasion, you should wear something that compliments this outfit such as a smart boxed headpiece or upturned brim. But a lot of weddings are becoming more relaxed these days and in those occasions your headpiece can also be relaxed with ether bright colours or soft nude and pink tones to match your summer dress. Lots of people are wearing flowers these days but it’s still nice to wear them on a hat instead of a headband, unless the wedding is very bohemian.

Katherine WalkerChoose the right hat to compliment your face shape.

  • If your face is round, chose a hat that is more architectural and angular, wear something on a slant or that cuts across you face. Stay away from fluff or round hats.
  • If your face is square soften the look with a round hat that has softer feathery features.
  • If you have a long face do not wear anything that is to tall, have an angular headpiece that cuts across the face to break up the length.

When visiting a milliner chose your outfit first so that your Milliner will be able to design you a hat to match, the hat also has to match your personality, the shape of your face, the cut of your dress and colour but you can leave that up to the milliner.

Katherine WalkerA good milliner will always check the design with you and let you try it on halfway through the design process so that you can be sure you are completely happy and looking forward to wearing it.

New Bridal Fragrance Collection: Design In Scent – Is Out Now!

In May 2014, scent designer, Gemma Hopkins, the Founder of Design In Scent, was the first to link the power of scent with the magic of weddings. It was in 2016 when she partnered with wedding planner Meghan Fay, MD of Design In Scent, that the UK’s first and only dedicated wedding fragrance collection was developed and the Design In Scent Wedding Fragrance Journey™ concept was born.

Design in Scent

Scent, unlike any other sense has an uncanny ability to move, evoke and inspire us.  It can transport us to a past moment in our lives, another place on the globe or a hidden crevice in our heart. The ability to capture such a momentous occasion and the meaning behind is why wedding scent is becoming an increasingly important part of the wedding day.

Companies big and small are now following in Design In Scent’s footsteps and creating fragranced products for weddings. From Floris who have recently launched their “Together” Fragrance Customisation to Jo Malone’s Bridal Lace Bottle Collection.

Design in Scent

The first time we smell a new scent, we subconsciously associate it with what we are experiencing at the time. This link is permanent, which is why even years later, smell can continue to evoke strong emotional responses. A bride who wears a new perfume during her engagement or a guest who smells a novel fragrance at a wedding will forever associate this scent with the celebration. Years later, a hint of the fragrance will elicit the feelings of love, joy and elation that the bride, groom and guests felt on the wedding day.

Design in Scent

Up until this summer, Design In Scent worked only on a couture basis, designing bespoke wedding fragrances for private clients who wished to fully scent their weddings. While continuing with their bespoke work, on 3 July 2017, Design In Scent  opened their doors to the public for the first time with the launch of their inaugural fragrance collection for retail. Designed especially for weddings, the collection includes 8 eau de parfums and 4 ambience fragrances. The ambience fragrances will be available in candles, ambience mists and intelligent air diffusers for scenting large spaces. A range of miniature products that can be personalised will be available for guest favours. This range of fragrances and products will give couples the ability to weave scent throughout their engagement and wedding day in many unique and creative ways.

Design in Scent
Richard Corrigan Mayfair

After debuting at the Richard Corrigan’s Wedding Show in London, Design in Scent are throwing open their previously bespoke-only doors, to make way for a revolutionary collection of fragrances, designed to connect with the meaning and joy of a wedding.

Launching on 3rd July 2017, the Design In Scent Wedding Collection consists of four exquisite Fragrance Journeys™.  Within each journey is a feminine eau de parfum, a masculine eau de parfum and a third Union fragrance.  The Union blends the most beautiful fragrance notes from the masculine and feminine scents to create a unique yet recognisable scent.  Bride Icon had the opportunity to try some of the combinations and we must say the scents were incredibly unique – but we loved the flowing of the fragrances into one great union!

The Fragrance Journeys™ have been designed to represent both the individualities of each partner as well as the magic that coming together as a couple sets in motion.

With twelve fragrances to choose from, the key is discovering which speaks to your heart.  The Design In Scent Wedding Collection includes personal fragrances, ambience mists (for scenting the air, invitations, linen and confetti), intelligent diffusers and many personalised gifting options so that you may share your wedding fragrance story with those you love most.

Fashion is one of Pakistan’s leading export industries and runs to a multi-billion pound industry and growing. Events profiling the leading names of that industry serve to challenge the West’s perceptions of Pakistan and increase the trading links between our two nations.

Adnan Ansari, Creative Director at Riwayat said “It was a privilege to work so closely with the High Commission to deliver this hugely successful event. Their commitment to deliver a truly inspiring event matched with Riwayat’s expertise and ability to deliver was a powerful force. We are so proud of our Pakistan and so proud to present it’s best face on a huge platform in London.”
