Olverum

Olverum – A Royal Appointment

Olverum bath oil with its aromatic senses is rumoured to be a favourite beauty regime for the Royal Family!  Bride Icon have had an opportunity to find out exactly why this elegant little green bottle is thought to have become an essential product for the Royals.

Olverum

Firstly, without even opening the bottle the appearance oozes a sense of calm therapy that already sets the scene on what is about to become a very indulgent experience.  Olverum is a unique and highly concentrated, therapeutic bath oil which contains 10 pure essential oils, carefully blended to work synergistically.  However, what is most important to note is that an Olverum bath is a very effective way to naturally relieve stress and help you achieve a great nights’ sleep – something that is essential to every bride to be!  It is also a great way to ease aching or sore muscles (such a treat after a workout!) and is the perfect soothing antidote to a cold or flu  – not forgetting the unique aromatic, unisex scent.

For many years Olverum survived only by word of mouth – a cult product known in the UK to only a small number of passionate devotees. Now beautifully re-packaged, yet still retaining the same formulation loved for over eight decades, Olverum recently re-launched under new British ownership.

Olverum

Bride Icon has indulged itself with numerous relaxing baths using Olverum and we can only describe it as a heavenly route to eternal exquisiteness.  With every bride, stress and long days of endless planning is all part and parcel of the build up to their exciting day, so what more could you ask for than to pamper yourself with a luxurious bath oil that creates the most perfect aromatic explosion to all your senses.

The Sunday Times Style Magazine recently described Olverum as a ‘bath nirvana’. It truly is… and one that every Bride would want to keep hold of!

Olverum

You can get your own bottle of luxury from Harvey Nichols, Fenwick and Conran. The 125ml bottles is £32.00 and will be enough for 25 baths.  The 250ml size will be £58 and enough for 50 baths. The travel set is £22 and enough for 9 baths.  For further details see www.olverum.com

Shaan Mu

Shaan Mu Expert Make-up Artist @ Aashni & Co Wedding Show

Aashni & Co

Shaan MuSomerset House, played host to the top South Asian fashion and beauty experts for the much anticipated Aashni + Co Wedding Show in London.  Among all the embellishments, jewellery and lavish designs, Bride Icon caught up with the celebrity makeup artist Shaan Mu.  This cheeky chappie with a sparkling personality promotes a mega clientele list ranging from Bollywood stars such as Shraddha Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez to becoming a YouTube sensation in a short span of time with his outstanding expert beauty tips and masterclass tutorials.

Shaan Mu (Muttathil) began his career as a BSc fashion designer, and insists it all happened as a mistake!   No mistake when a chance offer to do a hair and makeup styling course in Delhi changed the direction of his career forever.  After becoming top of the class in cosmetics, he was certain, this is what he wanted to set out to do.  His career as a makeup artist began in 2006 unknown to the world of cosmetics, but 12 years later he holds a proud and gratifying catalogue of being part of 47 Bollywood movies, including 1 Telegu film and 1 international film.

We asked Shaan how it felt to be beautifying some of the most elite Bollywood stars and celebrities in the world!  Being the ever so professional he feels so blessed, appreciative and loves that he has been given such an opportunity.  No doubt saying it’s also been a struggle consisting of a lot of hard work.  However, by acquiring quite the business mindset, he has earned himself the recognition that he deserves as an accomplished makeup artist.  Shaan acknowledges being in the film industry is not easy and even super stars have to go through their tough times.  After struggling for years Shaan has reached the place he wants to be – although we think the world is still his oyster!

Shaan MuAs for brides, Shaan is clear on bridal looks and creativity, although he will advise and share his ideas on what would look good for a bride – he will always ensure the brides have their say, especially if they were after a particular look – recognising this is her day.  This celebrity makeup expert is a follower of trends and keeps up with them, but not necessarily all the time.  He would prefer as a beauty expert to mainly highlight their faces, especially around the eyes, lips and cheeks – the holy grail to the art of beauty!

Bride Icon couldn’t resist asking Shaan who would be the ideal icon that he would love to create a superior look for and, of course, internationally it had to be Kim Kardashian, who he says is a superb businesswoman in her own right.  Nonetheless, there is no doubt his heart is set on Rekha the Bollwood film idol who he considers a beautiful soul both inside and out would be the epitome of his career – we hope it happens Shaan!  We would like to say a huge thank you to Shaan for taking the time out to speak to Bride Icon at the Aashni & Co Wedding Show in London.

How To Choose The Right Hat For A Wedding By Katherine Elizabeth

Katherine WalkerAward winning designer Katherine Elizabeth gives her advice on how to choose the right hat for a wedding here on Bride Icon:

Mother of the Bride

The Mother of the Bride is one of the most important people of the day apart from the bride. She will spend a lot of time with guests so may want to move away from the traditional crown and brim unless her brim sweeps up. This also helps to take away shadows.  Alternatively you could wear a headpiece in sinamay or parisisal straw or a cocktail hat.  Always wear your hat on a slant as that is the most flattering position.

Katherine WalkerGuest at a wedding

If you choose a formal outfit to reflect the occasion, you should wear something that compliments this outfit such as a smart boxed headpiece or upturned brim. But a lot of weddings are becoming more relaxed these days and in those occasions your headpiece can also be relaxed with ether bright colours or soft nude and pink tones to match your summer dress. Lots of people are wearing flowers these days but it’s still nice to wear them on a hat instead of a headband, unless the wedding is very bohemian.

Katherine WalkerChoose the right hat to compliment your face shape.

  • If your face is round, chose a hat that is more architectural and angular, wear something on a slant or that cuts across you face. Stay away from fluff or round hats.
  • If your face is square soften the look with a round hat that has softer feathery features.
  • If you have a long face do not wear anything that is to tall, have an angular headpiece that cuts across the face to break up the length.

When visiting a milliner chose your outfit first so that your Milliner will be able to design you a hat to match, the hat also has to match your personality, the shape of your face, the cut of your dress and colour but you can leave that up to the milliner.

Katherine WalkerA good milliner will always check the design with you and let you try it on halfway through the design process so that you can be sure you are completely happy and looking forward to wearing it.

Design in Scent

New Bridal Fragrance Collection: Design In Scent – Is Out Now!

In May 2014, scent designer, Gemma Hopkins, the Founder of Design In Scent, was the first to link the power of scent with the magic of weddings. It was in 2016 when she partnered with wedding planner Meghan Fay, MD of Design In Scent, that the UK’s first and only dedicated wedding fragrance collection was developed and the Design In Scent Wedding Fragrance Journey™ concept was born.

Design in Scent

Scent, unlike any other sense has an uncanny ability to move, evoke and inspire us.  It can transport us to a past moment in our lives, another place on the globe or a hidden crevice in our heart. The ability to capture such a momentous occasion and the meaning behind is why wedding scent is becoming an increasingly important part of the wedding day.

Companies big and small are now following in Design In Scent’s footsteps and creating fragranced products for weddings. From Floris who have recently launched their “Together” Fragrance Customisation to Jo Malone’s Bridal Lace Bottle Collection.

Design in Scent

The first time we smell a new scent, we subconsciously associate it with what we are experiencing at the time. This link is permanent, which is why even years later, smell can continue to evoke strong emotional responses. A bride who wears a new perfume during her engagement or a guest who smells a novel fragrance at a wedding will forever associate this scent with the celebration. Years later, a hint of the fragrance will elicit the feelings of love, joy and elation that the bride, groom and guests felt on the wedding day.

Design in Scent

Up until this summer, Design In Scent worked only on a couture basis, designing bespoke wedding fragrances for private clients who wished to fully scent their weddings. While continuing with their bespoke work, on 3 July 2017, Design In Scent  opened their doors to the public for the first time with the launch of their inaugural fragrance collection for retail. Designed especially for weddings, the collection includes 8 eau de parfums and 4 ambience fragrances. The ambience fragrances will be available in candles, ambience mists and intelligent air diffusers for scenting large spaces. A range of miniature products that can be personalised will be available for guest favours. This range of fragrances and products will give couples the ability to weave scent throughout their engagement and wedding day in many unique and creative ways.

Hayley Paige

Hayley Paige In London’s Luxury Bridal Show @ Les Trois Soeurs Bridal

hayley paige

Canary Wharf, London became the epitome of bridal couture when Les Trois Soeurs Bridal hosted their luxury bridal catwalk show in association with Brides Magazine.  Among the elite designers, Miss Hayley Paige graced the event – all the way from New York  – with a sensational viewing of the 2018 collection.

Hayley Paige

Hayley who is here on her first trip to London – since the sweet age of 16, set the catwalk on fire with some surprises in between too.  The bridal collection was married in with one of a kind ‘red carpet’ and speciality pieces.  Hayley thought  it would be fun to mix it in with the bridal range to give it that extra edge and a touch of colour!   However, what caught our eye was the dazzling starry themes and the continuation of the celestial journey – there’s a lot of elements of star dusting and even hidden galaxies within the dress!

Hayley Paige

Hayley’s visit to London is part of a journey to see how the London bride differs from the brides in the States.  Hayley said she feels there is something particularly exciting about the London bride and is hoping to see what exactly she can learn and experience in terms of price point and balance and how it all could be aligned with what the Hayley Paige aura is about.

Hayley Page

We asked Hayley which dress would be her signature statement dress and her reply was  “it had to be the Ball Gown, mostly because that’s where the Miss Hayley Paige domain and iconic novelty has come through. From a philosophical stand point, she’s the girl that wants something that’s really going to set her apart!”  Of course, we couldn’t let Hayley go without asking who would be her ideal Bride Icon.   We were so touched to hear that it was her mum.  Hayley said she would have loved to dress her mum during the 70s retro era where she could push the boundaries but still be in the moment.  Hayley described how her mum was a risk taker in fashion but also very much part of her own style and inspirations growing up.

Hayley PaigeBride Icon would like to say a very special thank you to the lovely Hayley Paige for an enchanting vision of this fabulous collection.  Hayley asked us to write down our favourite dress, it was a little impossible with so many elegant designs – but we absolutely love the Lumi Gown twinkling with stars and glitter – it’s out of this world !!

Top Tips For Beautiful Hair On The Big Day!

Trichologist Sally-Ann Tarver provides Top Tips on how to get your hair in perfect shape for the big day.

Sally-Ann Tarver recommends undertaking a 12 month action plan for planning for the perfect hair day in advance encompassing the following stages:

Stage 1 – Ensure your hair is growing well – diet, supplements, laser therapy, stimulants to increase hair growth speed.

The early stages of big day hair planning are the ideal time to visit a Trichologist (hair specialist) to ensure your hair is growing at its optimum rate. A Trichologist can help you find any potential reasons for slow, weak, hair growth and recommend the right supplements to correct any deficiencies that may be potentially harming your hair. There are numerous hair supplements on the market but don’t put too much hope in them being the answer to all of your hair prayer’s, supplements can only help if it is correcting a deficiency. Simply taking large amounts of Biotin (because you’ve read it is good for hair ) will not help unless you are actually deficient. Increase your protein in your diet by making sure each of your meals is made up of around 30-40% lean meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts (note: go easy on the nuts as they are also high fat and you’ll never get into your dress!). If you find this hard, cheat and top up with a protein shake.

A number of Professional companies produce topical products which can slightly increase the speed of hair growth. It may only be millimetres a month but over the course of a year these all add up. One such product is Intensive Activating Lotion from La Biosthetique’s long hair range, it claims to increase the speed of hair growth by up to 30%

Laser Phototherapy is a treatment for hair loss. It works by flooding the scalp with focused light at a specific wavelength to energise the cells and stimulate blood circulation; stimulating hair growth and improving the structural integrity of the hair shaft. Although it is largely used by people as a hair loss treatment, many female users of the Theradome Laser Helmet complain that they need to colour their hair more often as the laser treatment makes their hair grow faster. Good if you want your hair to grow faster, not so good if you are trying to save money on hair colouring treatments.

Stage 2: Ensure you’re happy with your stylist.

Work out hair colour dates if you colour your hair on a regular basis, ensure that regrowth will be there right length for your colour the week before the big day.  Ideally use a salon which uses a hair damage mitigator such as Olaplex. Trim every 2-3 months if you are aiming for length. Start undertaking deep conditioning and protein treatments on a weekly basis.

Stage 3. Turn down the heat – minimise intensive heat sources.

We put a lot of thought into our shampoo and conditioner and may even treat it to an intensive mask occasionally but excessive heat can wipe out all of that good care and attention. Heat protection sprays are over rated and do little to stop the disintegration that gradually takes place when excess heat is used on a regular basis. Straightening irons are the obvious demon even though in more recent times they have been regulated to reach a maximum temperature of 185C. If irons are used on hair which is still partially damp, pockets of moisture become superheated, turn to steam with no way of escape. The steam blows tiny holes in the cuticle (outer layer) and over time this leads to disintegration, split ends and Trichorrhexis Nodosa; othose little white nodules you see at the ends of longer hair where breakage occurs with very little tension. Hair driers can cause almost as much damage or more if used incorrectly. Unless you can afford one of the new Dyson hair driers, only ever use your drier on low / medium heat and high speed, never on high heat AND high speed. I have seen patients who have literally burned chunks of hair off by using their hair driers like this.

Stage 4. Cover up in the sun to prevent hair bleaching.

If you have holiday in the sun booked in the 12 months before the big day, keep your hair completely covered while on the beach or around the pool. Take a collection of hats, scarves and bandanas with you. Sun bleached hair can be a nightmare for your hairdresser to balance up or blend in at your colouring appointments and the effect on your hair condition is truly undesirable for the perfect bridal hair look.

Stage 5. Consider hair add on pieces for longer or thicker hair or hair which hill hold curl better than your own.

Clip in hair extensions are brilliant for an occasional boost in volume or length but wear more frequently and they will cause traction where the clips attach. I have seen patients who wear clip-in’s regularly develop small bald patches due to hair being pulled out. One solution I have seen and been very impressed at its total lack of potential hair trauma is the Flip-In (www.flipinhair.co.uk). Basically it is a strip of hair like a clip-in but much thicker. A piece of translucent wire similar fishing line is attached to each end, you put it on your head, pull your own hair over the top to hide the wire and where the hair sits close to your scalp and that’s it. Easy to put on and take off and comes in a vast range of colours and lengths.

Stage 6. The Final Countdown

  • The month before – increase protein treatments if you want your hair to hold curl or moisture treatments if you want sleek and shine. See stylist for a bridal trial or two, take your headdress to ensure it works with the style. Never, ever book an appointment with a new stylist for the morning of your wedding and expect them to work magic – Yes, this does happen, every hairdresser has a funny story or two about the new client who turned up for their 30 minute appointment on the day of their wedding and they’d never met them before!
  • The week before – hair colour, trim and more intensive treatment.
  • The big day – don’t wash it on the day if you want it to hold a curl or are having an up-do, use minimal conditioner when you wash it the day before.
